In class, we are doing a new experiment on plants. We are starting a new terrarium using the Scientific Method. We are taking what we learned on our previous experiment and expanding it.
We created six groups of four students. Each group identified different variables to study.
Group 1 is looking at soil compaction. Our hypothesis is that plants will grow better when the soil is packed down. ~Lauren, Makena, Abby, Abrea
Group 2 is looking at soil types. We are using soil with moisture control and seed starter. Our hypothesis states that the container with the seed starter will have taller plants. ~Charli, Clara, Faith, Kerrigan
Group 3 is examining whether fertilizers impact plant growth. Our Hypothesis states that the fertilizer will produce taller plants.~Ashleigh, Cora, Ellie, Masden
Group 4 is looking at lighting. Our hypothesis is that the plant inside with artificial light will grow taller than plants growing outside. ~Keenan, Adin, Levi, Xander
Group 5 is looking at the shape of the containers. Our hypothesis is that the the container that is wider will have taller plants. ~River, Jackie, Amelia, Kyndell
Group 6 is studying the volume of soil. Our hypothesis is that the container with deeper soil will have plants that will grow taller.~Logan, Marty, Tegan, AJ
As scientist, we are learning to use accurate measurements and controlling variables. Our controls require special equipment and materials. We need water, soil, seeds, and containers. We are using measuring spoons and cups, and rulers. To practice math skills we are using the standard measuring system for water and soil components. We are using the metric system to measure growth.
Technology is utilized by creating google sheets to document change. Our groups will measure watering amounts, number of seeds, type of lighting, soil volume, the number of plants, and the size of plants.
